A Movement Was Born

The following is being reposted from Amy Kremer's blog, Southern Belle Politics. She is one of the original organizers that helped start the tea party movement in February 2009 and Atlanta was one of the first cities to host a tea party.

Wow! It is hard to believe that two years ago today, the modern tea party movement was born. As someone that was there from the beginning, I cannot help but to take a trip down memory lane.

The idea for a tea party actually was thrown out to the masses by Rick Santelli when he had this rant about the mortgage meltdown on CNBC.

The following day, after the video went viral, a group of conservatives on Twitter came together using the #tcot hashtag and had a conference call. I was on that call that Friday evening, February 20th, along with twenty-one other people. The purpose of the call was to plan for simultaneous tea parties across the country one week later. We defined our success by having 10 tea parties across the nation, with 50 - 100 people in attendance at each event.

We all got busy immediately planning our tea parties. One week later, on Friday, February 27th, at 12:00 noon EST, we had 53 tea parties with approximately 30,000 people in attendance! That was nothing short of amazing! All of those tea parties happened through social media and word of mouth, with no help from traditional media.

During that week, I worked with others to plan the first ever Atlanta Tea Party. On Friday at 12:00 noon, we had a spectacular tea party rally at the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta.

It began raining right before the event started. The tea party lasted for an hour and as the time wore on, the rain poured down heavier and heavier. Yet, the bone chilling cold and rain did not deter people, instead they turned out in large numbers with umbrellas, rain gear and of course, their tea bags! In the end, we had 400 to 500 freedom loving Americans at the first ever Atlanta Tea Party in the pouring down rain! We even had local media cover the event and footage from the Atlanta Tea Party was shown on Greta's show, On the Record, that evening on Fox News Channel!

Beginning Friday afternoon after the simultaneous events and continuing through the weekend, the calls and emails poured in from coast to coast. It was obvious to those of us that had been on that conference call one week earlier that anger was brewing. History was made on February 27th, 2009 when a movement was born!

Much transpired in the weeks to follow and much is still to happen within this modern day grassroots movement. History is still being written. But just look at where we have come from since that cold February day in 2009. There is so much that we have done and it cannot all be told here. However, I can sum it up by saying we have completely changed the political landscape of Washington, DC.

This movement is still in an infancy stage and we are just getting started! Look at what we accomplished on November 2, 2010 with no plan or footprint of what we set out to do in those early days.

Now, imagine what we can do if we continue to educate ourselves on the issues and work to grow the movement. We can work smarter and be more successful if we will stick to the same core principles and values that have fueled us thus far:

Fiscal Responsibility
Constitutionally Limited Government
Free Markets

Washington didn't know what to think of us 2 years ago and they still do not understand this movement. That is a good thing! Maybe they will work harder to do the right thing and rein in this debt. If not, we will work to retire them in round 2, coming November 2012.

We truly are in historic times and there is so much more to be told, but that will all come in due time. I just wanted to reminisce about the early days of the movement. Thanks for allowing me to walk down memory lane.

Eric worked tirelessly in those early days, as did so many of us, and he gives tribute to those people in his Happy Birthday post to the movement. I hope you will take a few minutes and share in his recollection of those historic times.

Counter Protest to SEIU Purple Army TODAY at Georgia Capitol

The purple army is coming!

As you probably know, SEIU has been staging rallies across the country to protect the Unions that have a stronghold on some state governments. This is an issue that has become front and center over the past week in Wisconsin and now it is spreading to Ohio and Indiana. Today, the SEIU will be holding a rally at the Georgia Capitol in downtown Atlanta.

There is no doubt that the tea party movement is alive and well and today, we they will see just how strong we are as a movement when we hold a counter protest at the Georgia Capitol.

Please join other freedom loving Americans this afternoon at the Georgia State Capitol at 4:00 pm. This is late notice, but this event is just coming together. We need to stand with Governor Walker of Wisconsin and these other officials across the country that are willing to make the tough decisions.

Please join the Coastal Georgia Tea Party Coalition's "Multi-Party" Gubernatorial Debate on April 20th at 6:30pm. The debate is being held at the Jekyll Island Convention Center and tickets are free! The Georgia Tea Party Coalition includes the following Tea Parties: Camden, Golden Isles, 13th Colony, and Tiftarea.

All of Georgia's Gubernatorial candidates were invited. The confirmed candidates are Chapman,
Deal, McBerry, Monds, and Scott. The candidates will observe a "cross-questioning format," which allows the candidates to question each other. This format should help to compare and contrast the candidates.

Candidate debates are important for us in the Tea Party movement, in that we will need a Governor for Georgia who will stand against the "tyranny" of the federal government. This will give all of us the opportunity to see who has the "fire in the belly" for these trying times and who will stand up for the citizens of the great state of Georgia.

I Am the Tea Party Leader!

Just last week, BigGovernment.com exposed that President Bill Clinton and James Carville are plotting to attack some of the leaders within the tea party movement. Well, that is going to be difficult to do, considering we are all leaders within this movement.

This planned attack is direct evidence the success of the tea party movement. If we were not having an impact, we wouldn't even be on their radar. Good job Patriots! Keep up the good work. The time is now and we must now back down!

As many of you know, Gwinnett Place Mall (Simon Properties) forced us to cancel the Atlanta Independence Day Tea Party, based on "reciprocal property easement agreements" - even thought it was held on private property NOT owned by the Mall/Simon. We have since found out the covenants and restrictions expired in 2004, and there were no current restrictions that would have allowed them to make us cancel. We were bluffed and bullied.

Regardless of this temporary set-back, we are already planning a bigger, even better event than April 15th, so please stay tuned for more information.

In the mean time, we encourage everyone to attend a Tea Party near you and show we will not be silenced.

The Cobb County Tea Party is more of an educational event, not a protest. They will not allow protest signs at the event. If you live in the metro area and want to attend a protest, please attend one of the ones listed below.

Many in the North Metro Atlanta area will be attending the one at the Georgia Capitol. I have also listed a link to find Tea Parties throughout Georgia in case you don't live in the Metro area.

Atlanta Tea Party in Gwinnett forced to cancel

Suwanee, GA. - The Atlanta Tea Party was forced to cancel it's Independence Day celebration in Gwinnett, after losing it's location due to the objection of Gwinnett Place Mall (a Simon company.) The Tea Party had been scheduled to take place in the parking lot of the old Macy's building at Gwinnett Place since March.

"It is unfortunate the event had to be canceled," said Julianne Thompson, event co-organizer. She continued, "The old Macy's building is on private property, and not owned by Simon Malls, however the mall manager asked the property owner and I to come in the office on Thursday of this week, and told us Simon does not want political events on it's property. They were also concerned about the fact we were using the term "protest." Although the event was on private property, the mall was able to assert authority on the matter due to recipricol property easement agreements."

Event Co-Chair Debbie Dooley stated, "Our Atlanta Tea Party team tried for the next day and a half to find an alternative location large enough for the event, and with the proper layout for our vendors, children's activities, and fireworks show, but we could not find anything suitable that would have been available on July 4th."

Thompson said, "We want to thank everyone in Gwinnett who worked hard to try to make this event a success: Judi Quigley, Bill Simon, Mark Williams (Printing Trade Company,) Kathy Hildebrand, Theresa Kenerly, Brett Harrell, and George Thorndyke (who was graciously allowing us to use his property free of charge, and sponsoring fireworks.) I also want to thank the Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District for welcoming us to the area, and the Gwinnett and 7th District GOP for promising volunteers for the event."

Dooley stated, "The most important thing to do at this point is to stay on message, so we are joining forces with the Cobb for a large metro-area Tea Party on Friday, July 3rd, at 6 PM. 1. Join TeaPartyPatriots.org. By July 4th, we want to have 1 million members of Tea Party Patriots. We cannot reach this goal without you! This movement is about the local Tea Party Patriot. It is a grassroots movement. The more we are interconnected the more quickly we can respond and act. This week's goal is to increase online membership from 1,830 to 6,000.

Americans for Prosperity has done a great job of explaining the tax cutting JOBS Act proposed by the Georgia Legislature. While most legislatures around the nation are working to penalize businesses through higher taxes, and more regulation, the Georgia legislature is bucking the trend and trying to lower taxes and create incentives for job creation and economic growth. Next Atlanta Tea Party in the Works for July 4

Our next National Tea Party date is July 4th – Independence Day. The theme for July Fourth is "Declaring Independence from Tax and Spend Politicians." In Atlanta we will have an Independence Day Tea Party in the parking lot of Macy's at Gwinnett Place Mall and plan to end the event with fireworks. Additionally, the metro counties Tea Party organizations will be participating in parades and other activities. If you cannot attend one of the larger events but would still like to participate in a Tea Party, we are setting up Backyard BBQ Tea Parties and an information packet you can download to incorporate Tea Party into your traditional July 4th traditions.

While we encourage all cities to participate in the Independence Day Tea Party, we know Patriots in Atlanta are clamoring for more right now! We are working on several other events and will have more details about those in the next week's email update.

Many, many people want a March on Washington and we are going to team up with Freedom Works with their March on Washington on September 12th. Thank you for attending a local Tax Day Tea Party on April 15th! On April 15th, there were over 850 Tax Day Tea Parties around the country and 1 in Denmark. There were 1,200,000 Patriots who came out to take a stand for fiscal responsibility with our tax dollars! You were one of those 1.2 million. In Atlanta, we had one of the largest Tea Parties in the country with over 20,000 people attending. Without you, the Tea Parties would not have been the success that they were.

Thank you so much for attending the Atlanta Tax Day Tea Party and helping making it such an amazing success! As I said last night, the event exceeded my wildest dreams!

At present time, our calculations are a crowd of about 15,000 - 20,000 people. The last Capitol Policeman I spoke with said that it was difficult for them to get an accurate estimate as the crowd grew so large. I was told that Sean Hannity reported 20,000+ so his staff may have had a more accurate estimate that I did.

At present time, the nationwide effort shows over 800 Tea Parties with a total crowd of over 750,000 nationwide. The numbers are still being crunched and that number will be re-tabulated.

MARTA, Parking, & Transportation

Because we are expecting a very large number of people at the event, the Capitol Police are closing off several roads surrounding the Capitol to give the crowds room to gather and join in the protest. While the closing of those roads helps the event, it does create some challenges for people coming to the event by car.

Our first recommendation is that you park at one of the outer lying MARTA (itsmarta.com) train stations and ride the train to the 5 Points Station in Atlanta. On foot, the 5 Points Station is a 4 minute walk (0.2 miles) to the Georgia State Capitol which is where the event will occur at 7 PM on April 15th. The map below shows walking directions. Point A is the 5 Points MARTA station and point B is the Georgia State Capitol.

If you prefer to drive, there are several parking decks near the Capitol and throughout downtown Atlanta. Some take credit cards, but many require cash. You'll probably need at least $20 to park for the event.

Underground Atlanta is a large retail center near the Capitol. It is directly beside the 5 Points Marta station which is shown in the map above. Underground Atlanta has ample parking and is only a 4 minute walk from the Capitol.

Some of the Counties and Cities surrounding metro Atlanta are arranging carpools and/or buses to help large groups of people get to the Atlanta Tea Party. What to Expect at the Atlanta Tea Party

The Atlanta Tax Day Tea Party is one of the hundreds of the Nationwide Tax Day Tea Party Protests. These Tea Parties started as a way to express outrage over stimulus spending, special projects or "Pork Projects," and increased taxes. Currently, there are over 500 Tax Day Tea Parties planned across the country on April 15th.

In Atlanta, the demonstration will begin at 7:00 pm in front of the Steps on the State Capitol. There is a Braves game that starts at 7:05. Several roads are closing and traffic is being re-routed to various places to make up for the street closings. Expect traffic to be even more nightmare-ish than usual. The Atlanta Police have advised us to encourage everyone to take Marta. If you take Marta, you can get off the train at the 5 Points Station so that you do not have to change trains.

Sean Hannity will be broadcasting live from the Atlanta Tea Party. His show, Hannity's America, will have a makeshift studio/stage setup from where he will broadcast.

With Sean Hannity's announcement of his live broadcast, the crowds are expected to be quite large. There will be an elevated stage so those near the front can see. There will also be speakers and 2 jumbotron tvs. If you are further back in the crowd, you should still be able to see and hear the events.

Bring handmade protest signs related to fiscal responsibility. The signs must NOT be on stakes or poles of any kind. Bring flags (again are NOT mounted stakes or poles)to wave in the crowd. Wear red to stand out in the crowd and to symbolize that Washington is running this country into "the red." Bring you loud voice and be prepared to chant, shout, and yell.

It may be hot or cold. You can never really tell with Atlanta weather at this time of the year. It may be raining. Even if it rains, we are still having the Atlanta Tax Day Tea Party outside the Capitol. If it does rain, come in rain gear and bring umbrellas. Imagine the impact to Washington if they see a crowd of thousands in the rain protesting high taxes and government waste.

The program itself is being nailed down as we speak. There will be music, guest speakers, videos, and more.

The Atlanta Police and the Georgia State Capitol Police will be on the grounds providing security, crowd, and traffic control. Remember these are public servants and give them the respect they deserve. If they ask you to remove a sign from a stake, they are only doing so for your safety and the safety of others in the crowd.

We have ordered porta potties and they will be on the grounds. No money can change hands on the Capitol Grounds so we will NOT have refreshments for sale. You can bring your own water and snacks if you would like. Volunteers will stay afterward to clean up. Do your part to help in the clean up process by taking your trash with you.

Bring cameras both still and video to record the event. There will be a central place to upload images after the event. We will add a link to that site in the next few days.

Join us in this exciting and historic endeavor as we tell Washington, We the People are silent no more! We the People expect and demand fiscal responsibility and accountability!!

Atlanta Tea Party Update March 29, 2009

As you are probably aware by now, Sean Hannity announced on his television show Friday that he will be broadcasting live from the Atlanta Tea Party. Since that time the other Atlanta Tea Party Coordinators and I have been inundated with phone calls and emails. Hopefully, this post will answer all your questions and explain our current monetary and volunteer needs.

URGENT NEED: County Coordinator for each county in the Metro area

Responsibilities include:

~ Coordinate bus and/or carpooling to the event from county

~ Field phone calls and answer emails from volunteers and Tea Party Goers in county

~ Collect contact information from your emails and phone calls about Tea Party in spreadsheet format

~ Plan a Pre-Party to kick off caravan from your county to the State Capitol

~ Plan Meet and Greet Sign Making Party to happen on a Saturday before the Tea Party

We will provide you with a detailed check list and be there to help you plan. Also, we will team new volunteers with experienced political activists so you will not be all alone learning the ropes and you will have someone else to help you with the organization.

URGENT NEED: Donations

With the announcement of Sean Hannity’s live broadcast, we expect a much larger crowd than originally anticipated. We need to have a stage, speakers, large screen projectors, sign in tables, t-shirts, etc. We would very much like to have enough speakers and projectors that people who are further back in the crowd still have the ability to hear and see. To do this, we need money. We have a donation button on the right hand sidebar of the AtlantaTeaParty.net site.

Weekly Conference Call

We will have a weekly conference call on Monday nights at 7:30 to discuss the current details, let you know of new volunteer needs, and allow you to give suggestions and input. This is a grassroots movement and we want to make sure you have an opportunity for input.

If you would like to attend the conference call, please email me with RSVP Monday 7:30 in the subject line and I will send you the call in phone number.

Volunteers and What You Can Do to Help

We need volunteers for many different aspects of the event. The most pressing volunteer need is County Coordinators, which are mentioned above. Other volunteer needs include:

~ Teams to help County Coordinators organize the Pre-Party and the Meet and Greet in each respective County

~ Registration and Sign-In at demonstration

~ Foot Traffic Flow at demonstration

~ Potentially t-shirt sellers at demonstration

~ Letters to the editor for local media

~ Call in to local and national radio shows

~ Invite like-minded friends, family, and neighbors to attend the Tea Party with you

~ Print flyers to hand out to people you talk to on a daily basis inviting them to the Tea Party

~ Use shoe polish to write AtlantaTeaParty.net on the windows of your cars

Carpools and Buses

With the announcement of Sean Hannity’s live broadcast and the fact that there is a Braves game in town, we expect traffic to be even more of a nightmare than it normally is in Atlanta. Parking will not be easy either. We need to have as large of a turnout as possible at our event since it will be televised nationally. We want to make transportation and parking to the demonstration as easy as possible for the Atlanta Tax Day Tea Party Goers.

The County Coordinators will arrange a central meeting place in each county to kickoff your trip to the Capitol. County Coordinators will plan a special Pre-Party before leaving for the State Capitol. If you absolutely cannot go downtown, you will be able to participate in the Tax Day Tea Pre-Party. We are listing the County Coordinators on Atlanta Tea Party website (http://atlantateaparty.net/).

Having buses and caravans arriving from all over the state will help us get additional press coverage and will get attention of people passing on the expressway. We are asking everyone who is not volunteering at the event to ride with the caravan from their county to the State Capitol.

Protest Signs

The Tea Party is a protest of irresponsible and out of control government spending. The major theme for the Tax Day Tea Party is “Repeal the Pork. Cut Taxes.” We encourage you to bring your own handmade protest signs to the Tea Party. For specific sign ideas, I will update the AtlantaTeaParty.net site in the next day or so. Please watch it for sign ideas.

Protest signs that are not in line with theme of the event will asked to be removed at the demonstration. Such signs include but not limited to: campaigning, racially inappropriate slogans, anything that suggests violence or unlawful activity, and/or partisan slogans.

Sean Hannity to Broadcast Live from the Atlanta Tea Party

Moments ago, Sean Hannity, of Hannity's America on Fox News, announced that he is going to broadcast LIVE from the ATLANTA TEA PARTY!!!! Fox will also have news crews in other cities around the country at their Tea Parties. This is huge and exciting news for the Atlanta event and also for the Tea Party movement in general.

We are honored to have Hannity covering our Atlanta Tea Party!

Because of this announcement, we are going to extend the time of our event to end at 10:00 and we may also be adjusting the start time. Be patient as we make a few adjustments to our plan. Donation Needs

We have added a donation button to the right side of the Atlanta Tea Party website. Here is what we are using our donations for:

Large Screen Television (or two): Joel Aaron of Sound Bytes on 920 AM has said that if we can get a large screen television (or two) that the station can probably have Hugh Hewitt and Bill Bennett address the gathering from a recorded video or audio segment. If you are able to either donate money for us to rent the equipment use the donation button on our site. If you have a business that could donate the equipment, please let me know (jennybethm@gmail.com).
Banner Sign: We would like to have an Atlanta Tea Party sign printed. If you are able to donate money for us to have a sign made, use the donation button on our site. If you have a business that can donate one please let me know (jennybethm@gmail.com).
Prizes: We would like to do prizes for a sign contest, door prizes for signing into the event, and prizes for the person who drove the furthest to attend, and the person who brings the most people with in a caravan, carpool, or bus. If you are able to donate money for us to purchase gift certificates, use the donation button on our site. Logo Deadline Extended by 1 Day!

We are extending the logo deadline by one day because we still have some people sending in logos. All new logos will be posted right after midnight tonight and the survey / poll will be posted at the same time!

If you have a logo you want to submit, please send it today! We are getting some great artwork and the traffic on the blog has really increased! We should have an Atlanta logo within the week, thanks to all of you!

Atlanta Tea Party Logo Contest!

The tea party plans are coming right along and we should be updating the website this weekend with more details! Right now, I want to reach out to everyone and ask for those creative ones among us to submit a logo to "brand" the Atlanta Tea Party. We have 8 more tea parties and events planned through November of 2010 and we all would love for Atlanta to have our own logo!

I requested a logo in an earlier post and in several emails I have sent out, but so far I have only received a few logos! Come on y'all! There are many creative people in Atlanta! Can you please help us with this? We would like to get in several more logos to lace on the website and have everyone vote on them! After allowing everyone to vote, we can have t-shirts, hats, bumper stickers, etc. made for our city! We need to get on the ball and get the contest underway!

If you are willing to spend a little creative juice on the Atlanta Tea Party, please submit your ideas to southernbelleblog@gmail.com by Monday, March 16th at midnight. We will continue to add them as we receive them. We should have all that we receive on the website on Tuesday morning for everyone to vote!

Atlanta Tax Day Tea Party & Request For Logo Design

Hey Y'all,
I hope everyone is doing well! I hope you noticed that our next Tea Party event is planned for April 15th on Tax Day! It is shaping up to be a huge event with great sponsors and we are looking forward to having one of the largest events in the country! I will continue to keep you updated here on this website, as well as the FaceBook event pages and groups. We have many social mediums for communicating, so hopefully, you will get all of the information you need!

Right now, I am putting a call out for your help! I am looking for someone to design a logo for the Atlanta Tea Party events. We have a national logo for the nationwide events (above left), but I am looking for something to 'brand" us that we can continue to use on all of our local Atlanta Tea Party events.

I know there are some very creative people out there and many of you have offered to donate your time and skills. If you can help out this effort, the Atlanta Tea Party Committee will be forever grateful! Of course, we will give you credit for your work! We would like to use the logo on all of our press releases, fliers, correspondence, etc. If you can come up with any thing that might grab our attention, please send it via email to atlantateaparty@gmail.com.

The tea party was an amazing success today! It was absolutely unbelievable the number of people that turned out in the horrible weather to have their voices heard! I am still overwhelmed! We all did a great job!

If you were not able to join us today, no worry! This was only the first of many events to come! We will have our voices heard! This is our country too! We are mad as hell and are not going to take it anymore! It is time for us to band together and stand up for what we believe in people! Today was a great first step!

If you missed it, Greta's lead story on the Fox News Channel tonight was "Breaking" news of the tea parties across the country! Our very own Jenny Beth Martin and Debbie Ellis were featured in interviews in the piece! Woohoo! Way to go girls! Y'all are both stars!

I hope everyone is all dried out and warm by now! I am dry, but cannot get warm! However, my soul is warm from thoughts of today! What a day!

Thank you for your interest and participation in the Atlanta Tea Party! We have had an overwhelming response and expect to have a very successful showing of supporters! We are already getting a lot of media attention, both local and national.

We are 24 hours away from this very important event! Please recruit everyone you can to come with you! Bring your neighbors, colleagues, family, friends, acquaintances, even strangers! People are even talking about bringing their children because this is their money the government is spending. The point is that the more in attendance, the louder we will be and we want to be heard in Washington!

We want those Senators and Congressmen to know we hired them, we can fire them! They work for us and enough is enough!

We have had a tremendous outreach of support and volunteers. I have received hundreds of emails asking what people can do to help and the answer is to bring everyone you can, bring your cameras and camcorders, and also make signs on poster boards. I am including some slog listed below for use on the signs. Also, remember to bring at least one tea bag per person, if not more!

This is going to be fun! I hope you are excited as the committee members are that have planned this event! We are looking forward to seeing you tomorrow!

As a result of Rick Santelli's rant on CNBC earlier this week, there is now a nationwide movement to hold tea parties at various locations throughout the US in order to protest the Obama Administration's economic policies and liberal spending bills! Conservatives, Liberals, and Independents are all involved in this effort! Talk about bipartisan support...this movement is full of bipartisan support! Perhaps the Adminstration and our no good, spend, spend, spend, and spend some more Congress could learn a thing or two from this effort! First, they are going to have to get their heads out of their a**es! Perhaps this movement will get their attention!

The bottom line is that we the people are fed up with the shenanigans of Washington! This movement is the beginning of having our voices heard and taking back our government that has been hijacked by a bunch of egotistical politicians that are out of touch with reality!

To move quickly with this effort, Top Conservatives on Twitter, Smart Girl Politics, the DontGo Movement, Americans for Tax Reform, the Heartland Institute, and American Spectator Magazine have joined forces to announce a “Nationwide Chicago Tea Party”, to be held on Friday, February 27 at noon EST. The tea party will be held simultaneously in Chicago, Washington DC, Atlanta, Orlando, and other locations around the US. This event will also be held on Twitter using the #teaparty hashtag.

If you are in Georgia and would like to participate or assist with this event, please contact me. We definitely want this event to be successful and the more people in attendance, the bigger statement we make and the more successful we will be in having our voices heard! We can do this people! Don't let any of these other cities put us to shame! Bring your best southern hospitality and let's have some fun while making a statement! We are working on local media being in attendance along with some state legislators. We are also hoping to get some publicity from local radio shows! As you know, the more people in attendance, the more publicity we will get! This event will be held Friday at 12 noon so what a great way to kick off your weekend. Happy hour will sure feel good on Friday! So what do you say...come join me for the party!
