A Movement Was Born

The following is being reposted from Amy Kremer's blog, Southern Belle Politics. She is one of the original organizers that helped start the tea party movement in February 2009 and Atlanta was one of the first cities to host a tea party.

Wow! It is hard to believe that two years ago today, the modern tea party movement was born. As someone that was there from the beginning, I cannot help but to take a trip down memory lane.

The idea for a tea party actually was thrown out to the masses by Rick Santelli when he had this rant about the mortgage meltdown on CNBC.

The following day, after the video went viral, a group of conservatives on Twitter came together using the #tcot hashtag and had a conference call. I was on that call that Friday evening, February 20th, along with twenty-one other people. The purpose of the call was to plan for simultaneous tea parties across the country one week later. We defined our success by having 10 tea parties across the nation, with 50 - 100 people in attendance at each event.

We all got busy immediately planning our tea parties. One week later, on Friday, February 27th, at 12:00 noon EST, we had 53 tea parties with approximately 30,000 people in attendance! That was nothing short of amazing! All of those tea parties happened through social media and word of mouth, with no help from traditional media.

During that week, I worked with others to plan the first ever Atlanta Tea Party. On Friday at 12:00 noon, we had a spectacular tea party rally at the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta.

It began raining right before the event started. The tea party lasted for an hour and as the time wore on, the rain poured down heavier and heavier. Yet, the bone chilling cold and rain did not deter people, instead they turned out in large numbers with umbrellas, rain gear and of course, their tea bags! In the end, we had 400 to 500 freedom loving Americans at the first ever Atlanta Tea Party in the pouring down rain! We even had local media cover the event and footage from the Atlanta Tea Party was shown on Greta's show, On the Record, that evening on Fox News Channel!

Beginning Friday afternoon after the simultaneous events and continuing through the weekend, the calls and emails poured in from coast to coast. It was obvious to those of us that had been on that conference call one week earlier that anger was brewing. History was made on February 27th, 2009 when a movement was born!

Much transpired in the weeks to follow and much is still to happen within this modern day grassroots movement. History is still being written. But just look at where we have come from since that cold February day in 2009. There is so much that we have done and it cannot all be told here. However, I can sum it up by saying we have completely changed the political landscape of Washington, DC.

This movement is still in an infancy stage and we are just getting started! Look at what we accomplished on November 2, 2010 with no plan or footprint of what we set out to do in those early days.

Now, imagine what we can do if we continue to educate ourselves on the issues and work to grow the movement. We can work smarter and be more successful if we will stick to the same core principles and values that have fueled us thus far:

Fiscal Responsibility
Constitutionally Limited Government
Free Markets

Washington didn't know what to think of us 2 years ago and they still do not understand this movement. That is a good thing! Maybe they will work harder to do the right thing and rein in this debt. If not, we will work to retire them in round 2, coming November 2012.

We truly are in historic times and there is so much more to be told, but that will all come in due time. I just wanted to reminisce about the early days of the movement. Thanks for allowing me to walk down memory lane.

Eric worked tirelessly in those early days, as did so many of us, and he gives tribute to those people in his Happy Birthday post to the movement. I hope you will take a few minutes and share in his recollection of those historic times.

Counter Protest to SEIU Purple Army TODAY at Georgia Capitol

The purple army is coming!

As you probably know, SEIU has been staging rallies across the country to protect the Unions that have a stronghold on some state governments. This is an issue that has become front and center over the past week in Wisconsin and now it is spreading to Ohio and Indiana. Today, the SEIU will be holding a rally at the Georgia Capitol in downtown Atlanta.

There is no doubt that the tea party movement is alive and well and today, we they will see just how strong we are as a movement when we hold a counter protest at the Georgia Capitol.

Please join other freedom loving Americans this afternoon at the Georgia State Capitol at 4:00 pm. This is late notice, but this event is just coming together. We need to stand with Governor Walker of Wisconsin and these other officials across the country that are willing to make the tough decisions.

Please join the Coastal Georgia Tea Party Coalition's "Multi-Party" Gubernatorial Debate on April 20th at 6:30pm. The debate is being held at the Jekyll Island Convention Center and tickets are free! The Georgia Tea Party Coalition includes the following Tea Parties: Camden, Golden Isles, 13th Colony, and Tiftarea.

All of Georgia's Gubernatorial candidates were invited. The confirmed candidates are Chapman,
Deal, McBerry, Monds, and Scott. The candidates will observe a "cross-questioning format," which allows the candidates to question each other. This format should help to compare and contrast the candidates.

Candidate debates are important for us in the Tea Party movement, in that we will need a Governor for Georgia who will stand against the "tyranny" of the federal government. This will give all of us the opportunity to see who has the "fire in the belly" for these trying times and who will stand up for the citizens of the great state of Georgia.

I Am the Tea Party Leader!

Just last week, BigGovernment.com exposed that President Bill Clinton and James Carville are plotting to attack some of the leaders within the tea party movement. Well, that is going to be difficult to do, considering we are all leaders within this movement.

This planned attack is direct evidence the success of the tea party movement. If we were not having an impact, we wouldn't even be on their radar. Good job Patriots! Keep up the good work. The time is now and we must now back down!

Impromptu Atlanta Candlelight Vigil Tonight, December 16th

As many of you know, Gwinnett Place Mall (Simon Properties) forced us to cancel the Atlanta Independence Day Tea Party, based on "reciprocal property easement agreements" - even thought it was held on private property NOT owned by the Mall/Simon. We have since found out the covenants and restrictions expired in 2004, and there were no current restrictions that would have allowed them to make us cancel. We were bluffed and bullied.

Regardless of this temporary set-back, we are already planning a bigger, even better event than April 15th, so please stay tuned for more information.

In the mean time, we encourage everyone to attend a Tea Party near you and show we will not be silenced.

The Cobb County Tea Party is more of an educational event, not a protest. They will not allow protest signs at the event. If you live in the metro area and want to attend a protest, please attend one of the ones listed below.

Many in the North Metro Atlanta area will be attending the one at the Georgia Capitol. I have also listed a link to find Tea Parties throughout Georgia in case you don't live in the Metro area.

Atlanta Tea Party in Gwinnett forced to cancel

Suwanee, GA. - The Atlanta Tea Party was forced to cancel it's Independence Day celebration in Gwinnett, after losing it's location due to the objection of Gwinnett Place Mall (a Simon company.) The Tea Party had been scheduled to take place in the parking lot of the old Macy's building at Gwinnett Place since March.

"It is unfortunate the event had to be canceled," said Julianne Thompson, event co-organizer. She continued, "The old Macy's building is on private property, and not owned by Simon Malls, however the mall manager asked the property owner and I to come in the office on Thursday of this week, and told us Simon does not want political events on it's property. They were also concerned about the fact we were using the term "protest." Although the event was on private property, the mall was able to assert authority on the matter due to recipricol property easement agreements."

Event Co-Chair Debbie Dooley stated, "Our Atlanta Tea Party team tried for the next day and a half to find an alternative location large enough for the event, and with the proper layout for our vendors, children's activities, and fireworks show, but we could not find anything suitable that would have been available on July 4th."

Thompson said, "We want to thank everyone in Gwinnett who worked hard to try to make this event a success: Judi Quigley, Bill Simon, Mark Williams (Printing Trade Company,) Kathy Hildebrand, Theresa Kenerly, Brett Harrell, and George Thorndyke (who was graciously allowing us to use his property free of charge, and sponsoring fireworks.) I also want to thank the Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District for welcoming us to the area, and the Gwinnett and 7th District GOP for promising volunteers for the event."

Dooley stated, "The most important thing to do at this point is to stay on message, so we are joining forces with the Cobb for a large metro-area Tea Party on Friday, July 3rd, at 6 PM. Top 3 Action Items for Atlanta Tea Party Patriots
Week of May 4, 2009 - May 10, 2009

1. Join TeaPartyPatriots.org. By July 4th, we want to have 1 million members of Tea Party Patriots. We cannot reach this goal without you! This movement is about the local Tea Party Patriot. It is a grassroots movement. The more we are interconnected the more quickly we can respond and act. This week's goal is to increase online membership from 1,830 to 6,000.

2. Call Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue and ask him to sign the JOBS Act. Also, include this in your email to your local Tea Party Patriots and ask them to melt the phone lines as well. You can read about Georgia's JOBS Act here: http://www.americansforprosperity.org/022009-georgia-jobs-act.
Americans for Prosperity has done a great job of explaining the tax cutting JOBS Act proposed by the Georgia Legislature. While most legislatures around the nation are working to penalize businesses through higher taxes, and more regulation, the Georgia legislature is bucking the trend and trying to lower taxes and create incentives for job creation and economic growth. Republican Governor Sonny Perdue, a tax and spend Republican, has remained silent on the bills, and it is possible he will refuse to sign. Let's light up Governor Perdue's phone lines and convince him that lower taxes are good not only for Georgians, but for all Americans. You can reach the Governor's office at:

Always identify yourself as part of the Tea Party Patriots so that elected officials will begin to understand that there is an organized citizen patriot army out there and they are going to have to deal with us on these types of issues. 3. Take Action Against California Prop 1A. The largest tax increase in the history of California has been disguised by dishonest politicians as a "budget cap." Proposition 1A is a symptom of much that is wrong in government, all across the nation. California often leads the nation, sometimes up in boom times, or as is currently the case, straight to the bottom. Help us send a message to the politicians in California that "enough is enough." Next Atlanta Tea Party in the Works for July 4

Our next National Tea Party date is July 4th – Independence Day. The theme for July Fourth is "Declaring Independence from Tax and Spend Politicians." In Atlanta we will have an Independence Day Tea Party in the parking lot of Macy's at Gwinnett Place Mall and plan to end the event with fireworks. Additionally, the metro counties Tea Party organizations will be participating in parades and other activities. If you cannot attend one of the larger events but would still like to participate in a Tea Party, we are setting up Backyard BBQ Tea Parties and an information packet you can download to incorporate Tea Party into your traditional July 4th traditions.

While we encourage all cities to participate in the Independence Day Tea Party, we know Patriots in Atlanta are clamoring for more right now! We are working on several other events and will have more details about those in the next week's email update.

Many, many people want a March on Washington and we are going to team up with Freedom Works with their March on Washington on September 12th. As we have more information about it, we will be posting it to TeaPartyPatriots.org and specific items related to Atlanta's attendance at this event at AtlantaTeaParty.net.

Tea Party Patriots is the hub website going forward for the National Tea Party Movement. The site is located at http://teapartypatriots.org/. The site is a work in process but already has awesome functionality. For instance:

You can join groups within the site to learn about your local Tea Party Patriots upcoming events.

You can submit ideas you would like to see Tea Party Patriots implement. You can also comment and vote on ideas already submitted to the Idea Board.

You will still be able to get specific details about Atlanta's Tea Party efforts at AtlantaTeaParty.net. I am working to update and re-vamp the website including adding links for each of the metro counties Tea Party websites, details about July 4th, and more.

Thank you for attending a local Tax Day Tea Party on April 15th! On April 15th, there were over 850 Tax Day Tea Parties around the country and 1 in Denmark. There were 1,200,000 Patriots who came out to take a stand for fiscal responsibility with our tax dollars! You were one of those 1.2 million. In Atlanta, we had one of the largest Tea Parties in the country with over 20,000 people attending. Without you, the Tea Parties would not have been the success that they were.

Here is a video from the Atlanta Tea Party that Luke Livingston from Ground Floor Productions created.

Next week we will be releasing a special keepsake DVD for purchase that will have all the speakers from the Atlanta Tea Party. There will be special bonus content, music videos and plenty of footage of attendees' signs.

Atlanta Tea Party Follow Up Action Items

Thank you so much for attending the Atlanta Tax Day Tea Party and helping making it such an amazing success! As I said last night, the event exceeded my wildest dreams!

At present time, our calculations are a crowd of about 15,000 - 20,000 people. The last Capitol Policeman I spoke with said that it was difficult for them to get an accurate estimate as the crowd grew so large. I was told that Sean Hannity reported 20,000+ so his staff may have had a more accurate estimate that I did.

At present time, the nationwide effort shows over 800 Tea Parties with a total crowd of over 750,000 nationwide. The numbers are still being crunched and that number will be re-tabulated.

We have two immediate actions:

1. We your feedback on the demonstration
2. We need your photos and video
